Lake Atitlán, Guatemala

Artesanía Maya

Weaving Tradition with Heart

Artesanía Maya is a women’s weaving cooperative based in a vibrant community surrounding Lake Atitlán, Guatemala. These 35 talented women preserve and celebrate traditional Mayan weaving techniques, which have been passed down through generations.

Each piece begins with the cultivation of locally sourced, 100% cotton and the preparation of natural, plant-based dyes. The weaving process is intricate and deliberate, taking a minimum of 15 days to create a single product. This dedication ensures that every item reflects the artistry and heritage of its maker.

When you purchase a piece made by Artesanía Maya, you support a cooperative where women directly benefit from their craft. While sales directly fund the artisans’ livelihoods, your purchase through The Artisan Atlas helps connect their work to a broader audience, empowering these women to continue their traditions and support their families.

Each product carries the name of the artisan who poured her time, skill, and dedication into its creation, making your purchase a connection to her story.

Mayanke

Ceramics Inspired by Nature and Heritage

Perched on the serene shores of Lake Atitlán, Mayanke is a collective of skilled artisans dedicated to creating ceramics that reflect the natural beauty and vibrant culture of their surroundings. Every piece is hand-painted with meticulous attention to detail, and in their commitment to craftsmanship, the artisans even craft their own brushes to achieve the most intricate designs.

The workshop, overlooking the tranquil lake, offers a well-ventilated and inspiring space where creativity flourishes. The clay is locally sourced from Guatemala, ensuring each creation stays rooted in the region’s heritage. Approximately 70% of Mayanke’s ceramics are crafted on a wheel—either powered by a traditional foot pedal or an electric pedal—while the remaining 30% are shaped using moulds.

Mayanke's ceramics are more than functional objects—they are pieces of art that carry the hands and hearts of the artisans who create them. Each item reflects a harmonious blend of tradition, artistry, and a deep connection to the surrounding environment, inviting you to bring a touch of Guatemala’s soul into your home.
